Welcome to the South Australian Motion Picture Industry Provident Fund

What is the Provident Fund?

“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”
– Gone With The Wind

You may not realise that ten years before Clark Gable growled his most famous words on the silver screen back in 1939, the South Australian Motion Picture Industry Provident Fund had already begun looking after people in need, in all areas of the movie industry. It was the first Fund of its kind established in Australia. Fundraising started with part proceeds of the 7th Annual Movie Ball in 1929.

This was an era when the Motion Picture Industry was just as unpredictable as it is today, with people in financial difficulties having nowhere to turn for help, not even the help of Government benefits that are available today.

The Provident Fund has been set up specifically to help in these situations because frankly, somebody does give a damn.

How is the Provident Fund funded?

“May the force be with you.” – Star Wars

The South Australian Motion Picture Industry Provident Fund has no paid employees and no shareholders – all those involved represent various sectors of the local motion picture industry.

Money to help maintain the Fund comes from a number of sources such as ticket sales to the Annual Movie Ball, raffles and donations.

Money is also earned from interest on our investments.  These funds are directly administered by Trustees under the experienced guidance of the Secretary.  The amount of money received annually varies from year to year.

The Trustees aim is to leave the principal intact, distributing only interest.  However, this is only a guideline, and does not mean any needy case is neglected.

So, it is reassuring to know as an employee in the motion picture industry, through money available from the Fund, the force is with you.

Who is eligible for assistance?

“Go Ahead. Make My Day.” – Dirty Harry

The South Australian Motion Picture Industry Provident Fund exists solely to assist employees in needy and sometimes emergency situations.

Those eligible are:

  • Any employee of any South Australian cinemas.
  • Any employee of a film distributor.
  • Any employee of a service industry reliant on cinemas for its existence – this is at the discretion of the Trustees.

Ex-employees in any of the above categories may also be eligible for assistance from the Fund.

You can see that the Provident Fund considers people in all areas of the industry, and their dependants.  A number of employees over the years have found the Provident Fund to be one of the most helpful forms of assistance in times of crisis… and knowing that, will surely help make your day.

How to apply for assistance?

“I’ll be back.” – The Terminator

If you believe the Provident Fund can assist you in a time of need, please feel free to bring your situation to the attention of the Trustees.  This can be done through your Manager, the person in charge of your Department, or through the Fund Secretary.

You can contact the Secretary personally via the details provided below.  In cases of emergencies, the Trustees are able to give immediate assistance of money or other help, as circumstances require.

Naturally, all applications are treated with the utmost confidence, and in a sympathetic manner.  The Trustees have no strict guidelines regarding the allocation of help, and as each request is of a very personal nature, it is considered on individual merits.

The Provident Fund is available to help you get back on your feet again, so you can say with confidence… “I’ll be back!”.
